Self Determination in Action

As a person with a disability, do you know the individual rights and support services you are entitled to?

Easteresals Midwest is now offering courses to empower people with disabilities to be a personal advocate for themselves and others within the disability community.

Courses Include:

My Life, My Rights: This course explores what it means to have freedom of choice and empowerment for people with disabilities. Increasing self-awareness and promoting self-determination, students will learn how empowerment enriches their lives and impacts our world.

Self-Determination Leadership: This course takes an in-depth look at how self-determination and advocacy empowered the Disability Rights Movement. Each participant will develop an understanding of what this empowerment looks like in their own life, and the impact this has in our society.

How to Become an Effective Committee/Board Member: This course will encourage self-advocates to realize what they can contribute and what they need in order to be a participating committee or board member.

Train the Trainer: Provides participants who have completed the My Life My Rights and Self-Determination leadership courses with the opportunity to learn how to teach self-advocacy trainings to other self-advocates. They are then certified to provide the training within their organizations or to other self-advocates.

All courses are free! We are flexible and will provide courses to meet the individual, family, or organization scheduling needs.

Each course may be coordinated in the following formats:

  • Classroom Setting at Easterseals Midwest locations or at a venue chosen by the participating organization.

  • Online using Zoom or Microsoft Teams Platforms

  • Self-directed video formats - Available for the My Life, My Rights course. Upon registering for this video course, you will receive a link to all modules and required worksheets, which can be printed at home or completed electronically. After watching all videos, you can complete the course evaluation to receive a certificate of completion.
